Quality of Initial Teacher Education in NSW report series

Digital Literacy Skills and Learning

The Digital Literacy Skills and Learning report reviews the content of current programs of study in initial teacher education that prepare teachers to use and teach Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in relation to curriculum content of NSW syllabuses. The report makes recommendations for areas where ITE programs may be further developed, improved or enhanced to reflect current best practice in relation to ICT content and pedagogy.

Learning Assessment

The Learning Assessment report identifies how student and beginning teachers can best learn to use, analyse, interpret and develop assessment to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice.

Learning to Teach Primary Mathematics

The Learning to Teach Primary Mathematics report provides a comprehensive review of 46 primary education degrees and recommends a whole-of-profession response to improving primary maths teaching. The report also recommends:

  • identifying knowledge, practices and developing new resources for effective primary maths teaching
  • strengthening accreditation requirements for preparing primary teachers to teach maths
  • greater maths teaching support for early career primary teachers
  • greater consistency in the assessment of primary teaching students' knowledge of mathematics.

Literacy Learning in the Early Years

The Literacy Learning in the Early Years report focuses on the adequacy of primary initial teacher education programs in addressing literacy learning in the early years (K-2) and specifically examines the approach of preparing early years teachers to teach reading. The report makes recommendations for areas where ITE programs may be further developed, improved or enhanced to reflect current best practice in literacy learning.

Online Initial Teacher Education in NSW

The Online Initial Teacher Education report looks at the extent of online candidature in initial teacher education (ITE) in NSW and the arrangements for and quality of professional experience placements in NSW schools and general quality of an online mode of study in ITE. The report makes recommendations for areas where ITE programs may be further improved or enhanced to provide high quality preparation for graduate teachers completing their studies online.

Classroom Management and Students with Special Education Needs

The Classroom Management and Students with Special Education Needs report evaluates the approach Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers take to the delivery of teaching teacher education students in these two National Priority Areas. The report reviewed the content, pedagogical approaches and assessment practices across 17 NSW ITE providers. The report makes recommendations for areas where ITE programs may be further developed, improved or enhanced to reflect current best practice in classroom management and teaching students with special education needs.
