NAPLAN - what parents need to know

Test results will help you understand how your child is performing in comparison to other students in your child’s school, their year level  and across the country.

Understanding NAPLAN results

Your child’s NAPLAN report will show their results in the key areas of reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy.

The report will also show the national average, the range of results for the middle 60% of students nationally and your child’s school's average for each test.

This means you will be able to compare the performance of your child against other students in the same year of schooling.

The additional student report will list all the questions in each test, along with a brief description of each question. This report shows you which questions your child answered correctly.

A common assessment scale is used on each NAPLAN report so that you can track your child's progress through the years.

If you have any concerns it’s recommended that you make an appointment with your child's teacher to discuss your child's results.

Minimum standard for literacy and numeracy

From 2020 students in NSW must reach the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to be eligible for the HSC.

There will be multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate the standard between Year 9 and when they complete their HSC.

Students with Band 8 results or above in Year 9 NAPLAN reading, writing and numeracy tests will have reached the minimum standard.

If your child does not receive a Band 8 result then they will have many more opportunities to  meet the minimum standards, by sitting the online literacy and numeracy tests in the following years.

Preparing for NAPLAN

Excessive preparation is not recommended and can place  unnecessary stress on your child.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning in school. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with test formats while also providing support and guidance.

The best way to support your child through NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are part of the school program and encourage them to do the best they can.

Disability adjustments for NAPLAN

Students with significant intellectual and/or functional disabilities may be exempt from NAPLAN tests.

All other students are expected to participate in NAPLAN. Students can access disability adjustments if they meet the criteria.

Adjustments to testing conditions should reflect the normal support a student receives in classroom assessments.

Large print, braille and black and white versions of the tests are available for students registered with the NSW DoE, NSW CEC or NSW AIS as vision-impaired.

Discuss any adjustments your child might need with their teacher and principal.

Contact your child’s school for more information.
