Home schooling consultative group

The Home Schooling Consultative Group (‘the HSCG’) has been established by (the former) Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (‘the BOSTES’) following the final report of the Legislative Council Inquiry (‘the Inquiry’) into home schooling in New South Wales.

The final report relating to the Inquiry was tabled in Parliament on 5 December 2014. The NSW Government’s response was published on 13 July 2015.

The Government supported a number of recommendations made in the report including:

That the BOSTES Board establish a consultative group to:

  • oversee consultation between the BOSTES and the home schooling population;
  • provide input to and review the design and implementation of home schooling policies and procedures; and
  • provide ongoing advice and assistance to the BOSTES.

That the consultative group be chaired by the Executive Director of Regulation and Governance from the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards Board. Membership of the consultative group to include at least four home schooling representatives and at least four others nominated by the BOSTES for their knowledge and expertise in primary and secondary education and the education of children with disabilities.

Terms of Reference

The terms of reference for the HSCG are consistent with the recommendation of the Inquiry, that is, the HSCG is to:

  • oversee consultation between the BOSTES and the home schooling population;
  • provide input to and review the design and implementation of home schooling policies and procedures; and
  • provide ongoing advice and assistance to the BOSTES.

Membership and contact details

In September 2015, the BOSTES called for expressions of interest from parents currently registered for home schooling for membership of the HSCG and from appropriately qualified members of the public for the BOSTES’ nominee positions on the HSCG.

Following an expression of interest process, the following members of the HSCG were appointed. To assist in facilitating communication between members of the HSCG and the wider home schooling community, members of the HSCG can be contacted by email.

Home schooling parents

The NSW Education Standards Authority is inviting expressions of interest for membership of the HSCG as a parent representative. Further information, including an expression of interest form, is available here.
